What Does It Take To Lead?

We are at one of those times in history that we will always remember where we were and what we were doing. What does it take to lead in a time like this?

We can look to history for examples like the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Abraham Lincoln or we look today for those whose dedication, competence and character help to point this country--or your institution on a path forward. Someone who has stood out to me over the last few weeks is Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the NIH Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease. His press briefings are straightforward, he shares credit and is looking from today to the long term. Dr. Fauci is leading from the middle.

Do not underestimate the impact you personally can have in your institution as you seek to help students or those who depend on your organization for social services or the families within your community. What does it take to lead?

I am convinced that there are a multitude of people in our country doing the same thing. They see a need in their family, community or workplace and step up to meet that need. Like Dr. Fauci, these people lead with humility, integrity and competence. In the same way, you can help your family, institution and community. Do not underestimate the impact you personally can have in your institution as you seek to help students or those who depend on your organization for social services or the families within your community. What does it take to lead? It takes a combination of events, it takes your character and it takes your skills. You will know when the time comes and do not hesitate to step forward.
